When it comes to heating systems there are many different types. From forced air, electrical, geothermal, radiant, and steam radiant heating systems. The 5 Different Types of Heating Systems

Forced Air

This type of heating is usually the most common type of heating system found in residential homes, retail stores, and larger buildings. The air is heated through a furnace and then blown or forced into various vents throughout the structure. Often referred to as a central heating system, the furnace that is responsible for the forced air can be powered by different fuels depending on your location & what’s available to you. Fuel types can vary from natural gas, electricity, propane, natural gas, and fuel oil. And the ducts are installed in the interior walls.

Electrical

This type of heating system is most common in homes that don’t have access to natural gas, propane, or fuel oil. When it comes to these types of heating systems the most common option is to install the heaters in baseboards that are controlled by a thermostat. The option is also available to control individual heating units on their own. It is important to mention that the cost of electricity is higher than with any of the other heating systems available.

Geothermal

This is the most energy-efficient option out of all the heating systems available. It gets its main source of heat from ground heat and uses the water from ground wells. This type of system uses little electricity and is a great energy-efficient option. However, the set-up usually costs much more than that of conventional options. In the long run, it can prove to be a great investment.

Radiant

This type of heating system is best for homes/businesses or buildings in general that have a boiler. Water is boiler heated and sent through the floor in tubes to distribute heat, from there the heat radiates up through the floor. The boilers used by radiant heating system usually uses fuel such as fuel oil, electricity, propane, and natural gas. 

Steam Radiant

This is one of the more outdated heating systems and is usually utilized in older homes that have radiators in various rooms. A boiler is used to send hot water to all the radiators to heat the desired room. Coldwater is then returned back to the boiler and reheated to be utilized once again in the heating cycle.

Should you notice air escaping even after your windows are locked, you may need to take a look at the seal around your windows and have any damaged ones fixed ASAP.

Heating An Empty House

While we all want to come home to a warm and toasty house after being out on the snow-filled roads in single-digit temperatures, heating an empty house is not the way to do it. If you will be gone most of the day or for the entire weekend you should not heat your house the same way as you would if you are not going to be there for long periods of time. Investing in a programable or smart thermostat allows you to set & control the heating of your home from your smartphone. This means you are able to increase the heat when you are on your way home without having to heat an empty house all day. 

Not Changing Those Air Filters

Your air filter is there to help filter out any dust or debris that can get in and hinder the effectiveness and how efficiently your heating system or furnace work. Dirty air filters thus make it harder for your heating system to function and perform properly. Not only will this affect the overall amount of heat in your home it can also lead to serious problems and repairs if left long enough. Make sure to change your filters regularly to prevent any repairs, damage, or lack of heat.

Cranking Up That Thermostat

While you may think if you crank your heating system all the way up to 85 degrees just to “get the house warm”  you aren’t actually helping the situation. In fact, cranking up your thermostat will not actually heat your house any faster than if you turned it down a bit. 

Closing Vents In Unused Rooms

This may seem like a perfectly good idea, I mean why do you need to heat an empty room that no one will be in? But the truth of the matter is, your heating system was designed to heat your house evenly. This means that when you close a heating vent in another room the heated air is not being distributed evenly which disrupts the balance and how well your heater works overall. 

No Regular Heating Maintenance

Scheduling regular heating system or HVAC maintenance is very important not only how effectively your heating system performs but also to the overall life of your system. And maintaining your heating system also helps to catch small issues before they become larger more expensive heating repairs!
